Overview

The Energy Corporation of NSW (EnergyCo) is a statutory authority established under the Energy and Utilities Administration Act 1987 and is responsible for leading the delivery of Renewable Energy Zones (REZs) and enabling transmission infrastructure, as part of the NSW Government's Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap (the Roadmap).

The Roadmap sets out the NSW Government's vision to coordinate investment in electricity transmission, generation, storage and firming infrastructure and transform the NSW electricity system into one that is cheap, clean and reliable.

As the infrastructure planner for the REZs, EnergyCo will recommend network infrastructure projects and will work closely with communities, investors and industry to coordinate investment in renewable energy generation, electricity networks and storage infrastructure in REZs for the long-term benefit of energy consumers, local communities and industry in NSW.

EnergyCo is also working to coordinate the transition of the NSW electricity system and is leading the strategic planning of certain transmission infrastructure needed to deliver clean, reliable and affordable energy to the households and businesses of NSW.

Renewable Energy Zones (REZs) and Transmission Infrastructure Projects (TIPs)

REZs are the equivalent of modern-day power stations. They combine:
* new renewable energy infrastructure, including generators (such as solar and wind farms)
* storage (such as batteries and pumped hydro)
* high-voltage transmission infrastructure.

EnergyCo is leading the energy transition in NSW by coordinatingthe development of REZs across the State. Most of the new energy infrastructure required to support the transition will be built in regional NSW, where our best natural energy resources are located.

EnergyCo is working to maximise the significant economic investment in regional energy infrastructure by delivering long-term positive benefits to regional communities that are hosting the critical infrastructure required for the transition.

This also includes working closely with communities, industry, regional stakeholders and government partners to coordinate the delivery of community benefits and ensure they are targeted to the unique needs and priorities of locals.

Central-West Orana REZ
EnergyCo is in the development phase for the State's first REZ in the Central-West Orana region. The Central-West Orana REZ is approximately 20,000 square kilometres centred by Dubbo and Dunedoo, on the land of the Wiradjuri, Wailwan and Kamilaroi people.

Key facts:
* The REZ will initially unlock at least 4.5 gigawatts of new network capacity by the late-2020s.
* New transmission infrastructure will enable generators (such as solar and wind farms) participating in the REZ to export electricity to the rest of the network.
* It is expected to bring up to $20 billion in private investment to the Central-West Orana region by 2030.
* At its peak, this REZ is expected to support around 5,000 construction jobs in the region.

Central-West Orana Transmission Project
The Central-West Orana REZ will be serviced by new transmission network infrastructure, including transmission lines and energy hubs, which will transfer power generated by solar and wind farms to electricity consumers. This infrastructure will be critical for the successful operation of the REZ. EnergyCo is leading the development of the REZ transmission network infrastructure as the Infrastructure Planner for the REZs in NSW.

New England REZ
EnergyCo is in the early stages of planning a REZ in the New England region, centred around Armidale on the lands of the Biripi, Dainggatti, Nganyaywana, Ngarabal, and Gumbainggir people.

Key facts:
* The REZ has an intended network capacity of 8 gigawatts.
* It is expected to deliver up to $24 billion in private sector investment.
* It is expected to support around 2,000 operational jobs and 6,000 construction jobs.
* Procurement for a Network Operator is anticipated to commence in 2025.

New England Network Infrastructure Project
The New England REZ will be serviced by new network infrastructure, including transmission lines, energy hubs and enabling infrastructure which will transfer power generated by solar and wind farms to electricity consumers. This infrastructure will be critical for the successful operation of the REZ. EnergyCo is leading the development of the REZ transmission network infrastructure as the Infrastructure Planner for the REZs in NSW.

Hunter-Central Coast REZ
EnergyCo is in the early stages of planning a Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) in the Hunter and Central Coast regions on the lands of the Awabakal, Bahtabah, Biraban, Darkinjung, Mindaribba, Wanaruah and Worimi people.

Hunter Transmission Project
EnergyCo is in the planning stages of the HTP in the Hunter region on the lands of the Awabakal, Biraban, Mindaribba, Wanaruah and Worimi people.

The HTP is one of the State's most critical energy projects and is essential for the transition to renewable energy under the NSW Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap as NSW's coal-fired power stations close.

Key facts:
* The HTP will strengthen NSW's core electricity grid by closing the northern gap in the 500 kV network,
* It will provide an additional 5 GW of transfer capacity and unlock electricity supply from the Central-West Orana and New England REZs.
* Procurement for a Network Operator is anticipated to commence in 2025 with early engagement of local industry to start from August 2024.

Illawarra REZ
EnergyCo is also in the early stages of planning for a Renewable Energy Zone (REZ), as set out under the Electricity Infrastructure Investment Act 2020, in the Illawarra region of NSW. The Illawarra REZ is located on the land of the Dharawal people.

South-West REZ
EnergyCo is in the early stages of planning a REZ in the South-West region of NSW around Hay on the lands of the Wiradjuri, Yorta Yorta, Baraba Baraba, Wemba Wemba, Wadi Wadi, Madi Madi, Nari Nari, Dadi Dadi, Kureinji and Yitha Yitha people.

Key facts
* The South West REZ is expected to receive up to $2.8 billion in private investment by 2030.
* At its peak, this REZ is expected to support over 2,000 construction jobs in the region

Engaging local and Aboriginal suppliers
EnergyCo is committed to ensuring local regional businesses and supply chains have an opportunity to participate in building the electricity infrastructure that will support each REZ in NSW.

EnergyCo will provide full, fair and reasonable opportunity for capable and competitive local and Aboriginal businesses and social enterprises to compete for work or participate in supply chains associated with the REZ transmission infrastructure projects.
