Overview

Borumba Pumped Hydro Project

The proposed Borumba Pumped Hydro Project is a 2000 MW pumped hydro energy storage system at Lake Borumba, located in Imbil, west of the Sunshine Coast.

The existing lower reservoir (Lake Borumba) will be expanded with a new dam wall downstream from the current Borumba Dam. A second reservoir will be constructed at a higher altitude. An underground powerhouse will link the two reservoirs together. When electricity is required, water will be released from the upper reservoir through underground turbines via tunnels to the lower reservoir.

In June 2023, the Queensland Government announced $6 billion in funding to progress the Borumba Pumped Hydro Project. The total project cost is estimated to be $14.2 billion.

Pending successful planning and environmental approval, the Project is targeting first power in 2030.

Indicative delivery schedule

The announcement of the Queensland Government's final investment decision means that the Project has now formally moved into the planning and approvals process for both the exploratory works and main works.

Pending successful environmental approvals, exploratory works are due to commence in Q3 2024, with main works to commence by late 2025.

Exploratory works will comprise detailed geological investigations including geotechnical drilling and excavation of an exploratory tunnel to the proposed underground powerhouse cavern, road improvements, construction of access tracks, and construction of temporary exploratory workers' camps and supporting infrastructure.

Main works will include construction of a new lower Borumba dam, the upper reservoir dams, tunnels and underground powerhouse, and associated construction facilities such as access roads and surface works including switch yard, quarries, and construction camps.

Main support works comprise activities that are temporary in nature and enable commencement of main works. Main support works packages are focused on enabling safe access to site, as well as establishing infrastructure for surface and underground drilling amongst other items, and include:
