The Hemi Project is a greenfield gold development forming part of the Northern Star's long-term regional growth strategy. The project involves establishing a new open-pit mining operation, gold processing plant and the supporting non-process infrastructure. A final investment decision is due in 2027 for a two and half year construction period.
The Project is located within 60 minute drive from the ports and regional centers of Port Hedland and Karratha. The region is rich with critical infrastructure to support a future mining operation including two major sealed highways that run within 20km of the Hemi discovery, a gas pipeline located 5km and 20km from Hemi, and a major 220kV electricity transmission line which also lies within 20km of Hemi.
The Processing Plant will be delivered through an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction Management (EPCM) delivery model. Ore is initially treated via a multi-stage comminution circuit utilising two stages of crushing, high pressure grinding rolls, ball milling and classification. The comminution circuit product is fed to a flotation circuit with flotation concentrate reporting to the POx circuit and flotation tailings to the CIL neutralisation circuit. The POx circuit is utilised to oxidise the refractory sulphide minerals to enable liberation and recovery of encapsulated gold. Following oxidation, the process transitions to a conventional carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit for gold adsorption and final extraction via elution and electrowinning.
Supporting the processing plant will be a range of non-process infrastructure. The engineering, procurement and construction of the non-process infrastructure will be supported by a Project Management Consultant working on an integrated basis with Northern Star.
Northern Star will undertake the sourcing and selection of suppliers for the project through an open tender process. Northern Star will utilise the ICN network to publish upcoming tenders and supply opportunities. Interested suppliers may be included in the Request for Tender process. However, in some circumstances, Northern Star may choose to use an existing supplier to leverage off their specific experience and knowledge.
Northern Star will actively seek and show preference to Suppliers who demonstrate a commitment to Work Health and Safety environmental, social and governance practices in alignment with Northern Star's Supplier Code of Conduct available on the Northern Star website. Northern Star encourages participation from local, regional, Indigenous owned and diverse suppliers as apart of the procurement approach.
