.A-CAES NSW Pty Ltd (A-CAES NSW) is proposing the Silver City Energy Storage (SCES) Project (the Project), which will use Hydrostor's proprietary advanced compressed air energy storage (A-CAES) technology to provide large-scale, long-duration energy storage for Broken Hill and the Far West of NSW.
About the Project - SCES
The project capacity is anticipated to be 200 megawatt (MW) generation and 1600 megawatt hours (MWh) of energy storage, including a reserve of 250 MWh (50 MW of electricity for up to hours) to provide back-up power to Broken Hill and the Far West
The Project includes the SCES Facility and a new 220 kV electricity transmission line approximately 16 km in length. The proposed SCES Facility is to be co-located on the Potosi Mine site, approximately 3 km northeast of Broken Hill between the Silver City and Barrier Highways.
The proposed transmission line passes between South Broken Hill and the airport, connecting to an existing Transgrid substation in Pinnacles Road.
The Project involves the design, construction and operation of the SCES Facility, including
ancillary power, water and road infrastructure. The key project components include:
- The SCES Facility, comprising two 100 mega watt (MW) generator trains for producing 200 MW of electrical power and associated infrastructure and civil works,
- A 300 ML (maximum capacity) water storage reservoir with a new connection to the existing Stephens Creek raw water pipeline,
- An underground compressed air storage cavern of approximately 250,000 m3 and a depth of 600 m below ground, located immediately below the SCES Facility and connected by an air and water shaft, and -
- A high-voltage 220 kV transmission line approximately 16km long, predominantly above ground on monopoles.

This package involves the design, fabrication, testing, and delivery of specialized electrical panels required for key components of the A-CAES facility. The panels will house Generator Circuit Breakers (GCBs), Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), and Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) to ensure seamless power management and operational reliability.
Scope includes:
Custom-built panels to accommodate GCB, VFD, and UPS components.
Wiring, protection, and control systems integrated within the panels.
Factory acceptance testing (FAT) to ensure quality and compliance.
Delivery, installation support, and documentation for seamless integration with the electrical system.
Construction of the sealed asphalt road, w subgrades and wearing courses for access into the project compound

Supply of 2 air filter and separator for compressed air (60bar) from cavern to turbomachinery.
Construction and Installation of all structural, mechanical and piping equipment for the topside facility
Supply of various types of control valves (e.g., globe, butterfly, ball, and diaphragm valves) for different applications required to regulate the flow, pressure, and temperature of fluids and gases within the A-CAES facility. These can include actuators and positioners for automated control and integration with plant systems.
Supply of essential hardware components designed to optimize the operation and management of control systems in industrial environments. This includes advanced consoles, monitors, servers, and communication devices that facilitate real-time monitoring, data analysis, and decision-making processes.
Supply of various LV and HV cabling products to required lengths
Supply of temporary fencing and traffic barriers required to manage traffic and transport management during construction
Supply of advanced application specific fire protection solutions designed to safeguard critical equipment and facilities from fire hazards. These systems utilize a combination of water-based deluge mechanisms and specialized fire suppression technology to quickly extinguish flames and prevent the spread of fire in high-risk environments. Engineered for reliability and efficiency, the systems will be tailored to meet the specific needs of lube skids and substations, ensuring compliance with safety standards and regulations.
Supply of HDPE and steel pipes of various diameters, suited for different applications. Fittings, flanges, gaskets, and fasteners for secure connections of the pipes including any corrosion protection and pressure testing to meet project specifications.
Provision of inspection and testing services during construction to ensure the quality and compliance of equipment and materials used in the A-CAES facility. The services can either be performed onsite during installation and in-shop at manufacturing locations to identify and resolve issues early in the process.
Scope may include:
- In-shop inspections of fabricated components (e.g., piping, steel, valves) to verify quality before delivery.
- Onsite testing during and after installation to confirm proper function and compliance with standards.
- Non-destructive testing (NDT), Construction Materials Testing(CMT), hydrostatic testing, and other specialized inspections as required.
Supply of process automation system and control room set up.
Supply of various types of isolation valves (e.g., gate, globe, butterfly, ball valves) suited for different applications that are pressure-rated and made of corrosion-resistant materials.
Onsite IT support services to supply and maintain for construction operations, IT and specialist logistics infrastructure that might include but not exhaustive or limited to: Data servers, workstations, laptops and periphal IT equipment, network connection and switching infrastructure, warehousing scanning devices and workstations, RFID detection equipment, and, trade labour timecard systems
