Overview

The purpose of this project is to establish the Victorian Melanoma and Clinical Trials Centre (VMCTC) integrated with Alfred Cancer and some of Alfred Research's functions. The proposed facility will be located at 545 St Kilda Road and will provide specialist, multidisciplinary care of patients with all stages of melanoma in a dedicated physical facility. The aim of the project is to design, construct and commission a dedicated stand-alone new facility that accommodates clinical services and research facilities.

The VMCTC Facility is a product of Alfred Health's desire for a singular highly visible centre for cancer treatment and research, supporting high-end research into cancer, and providing a patient centred experience. The building primarily hosts programs associated with cancer care and clinical trials, including being the home of the Victorian Melanoma Service, itself already a globally renowned centre of research and patient care.

The Architectural brief was to create a building that can be seen as an 'icon', representing a global centre of excellence in research in melanoma and other cancers, and one that will attract and retain the best researchers in the world to continue to forge the best ongoing treatments and preventative procedures for these diseases.

The VMCTC involves the construction of a new building comprising 2 basement levels and 7 above ground levels. In summary the scope of the project by level is as follows:

  • Level B2 Parking Allocation
  • Level B1 Ambulance & Visitor Drop Off, Parking Allocation, Staff End of Trip Facility, PET/CT Medical Imaging Suite, Plant & Substation
