SEA 1000 Japanese Government & Industry

Overview

Background

Japan has designed and built submarines based on Japanese-developed technologies for over 100 years including the Imperial Japanese Navy. Japan has built more than 50 JMSDF submarines after the WW II.

Japan develops a new type of JMSDF submarines approximately once every 10 years.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Kawasaki Heavy Industries, two ship building companies, and Japanese equipment manufacturers have built a number of high-performance submarines, while they are competing for their technologies and cooperating with each other.

Japan operates six SORYU class submarines and is building four more. The SORYU class is the largest conventional submarine.

All the JMSDF submarines were delivered on time even in the year when the Great Hanshin Earthquake occurred near Kobe.

Excellent equipment reliability and boat availability have been achieved due to outstanding Japanese production management system.

Japan has established a government industry team to respond to CEP, with MHI taking an industry lead.

Technical

Japan is proceeding with the Pre-Concept Design which meets the Australian requirements by applying proven technologies based on SORYU class submarine.

Japan will transfer technical information in an appropriate manner to ensure Australian sovereign capability to operate and sustain Australian Future Submarines.

Industry

Japan is developing three build options : Australian build, Japanese build and Hybrid build, as requested by the Australian government.

For all three build options, Japan is investigating to maximize Australian industry involvement.

Japan will introduce and share Japanese production management system for Australian Future Submarines, which will contribute to improving quality, cost and delivery for Australian industries.

Expressions of Interest

Japanese government & Industry encourage interested suppliers to register an expression of interest (EOI) for the SEA1000 future submarine project. This process is the first step for establishing the strong and sustainable relationship and partnership between Australian Industry and us.

Please note: Registering this EOI does not guarantee that your company will receive an access from Japanese government & Industry. Your company information that you supply through EOI might be used in our proposal for SEA1000 Competitive Evaluation Process (CEP). Detail and specific engagement will take place after CEP.
