Vestas, one of the most experienced wind energy providers globally, is developing the Project.
Vestas is a global leader in sustainable energy solutions. Vestas designs, manufactures, installs and services wind turbines around the world. Vestas has delivered more than 200,000 MW or about 91,000 wind turbines in 88 countries, which accounts for almost 20 per cent of the total worldwide installed capacity.
Vestas Australia has constructed and operates more than 2,200 wind turbines across 60 wind farms in Australia. With more than 30 years' experience, Vestas Australia has a 8 GW portfolio (including projects under construction), over 1 GW of which is installed in NSW. Vestas employs more than 800 people across Australia and New Zealand, prioritising local expertise, and reliable long-term service for our projects.
Abercrombie Wind Farm
Abercrombie Wind Farm is being developed in the South West Renewable Energy Zone (SW REZ), 40 km southwest of Hay, NSW, in the Hay and Edward River Local Government Areas.
The region southwest of Hay has several outstanding features that make it one of the most suitable locations for wind energy development in New South Wales. The site has demonstrated consistently high wind speeds, making it one of the strongest wind resources in NSW. Its predominantly flat terrain supports efficient construction and lower civil costs.
The surrounding grazing land is highly compatible with wind farm operations, allowing agricultural activities to continue with minimal disruption due to the project's small footprint. Additionally, the area's low-density rural setting helps minimise impacts on local community amenity.
The project will consist of up to 348 Vestas wind turbines, generating up to 2.5 gigawatts of low-cost renewable energy. Vestas will design, supply, construct and maintain the proposed wind farm for the life of the Project.
Project timeline
In 2024, DPHI issued the Secretary's Environmental Assessment Requirements (SEARs), setting the framework for the preparation of the project's Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).
To meet these requirements, Vestas is undertaking detailed studies to assess potential environmental impacts and benefits, including independent visual, noise and ecological assessments of the proposed wind turbines. Construction is currently targeted to commence in 2028.
Workforce opportunities
If approved, the Abercrombie Wind Farm will create up to 600 new jobs during construction and up to 40 long-term service and maintenance jobs during operations.
Construction and operation will require a range of skills such as engineering, trade, project management and transport. Operational roles are expected to be based permanently in the the Hay Shire and Edward River regions.

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST (EOI)
Vestas encourages local industry interested in supplying to the project to provide a Expression of interest (EOI) through the ICN Gateway.
Information on specific supply opportunities will be communicated on the ICN Gateway project page as it becomes available, with local industry able to register its interest against them.

- You respond to all project and work package-specific questions.
It is important that businesses submitting an EOI are aware that their submission does not guarantee that they will progress further in the procurement process. Only companies that can demonstrate capability and capacity in accordance with Vestas standards will be invited to pre-qualify for specific opportunities.
