Overview
The Department of Transport and Planning, on behalf of the Victorian State Government, is undertaking a procurement process for Melbourne's metropolitan train franchise.
The MR5 train franchisee will operate and maintain Melbourne's metropolitan rail network, providing over 2,000 daily services across over 1,000 kilometres of track.
With an evolving fleet, seven train maintenance depots, more than 220 stations and nearly 7000 employees, the franchisee will deliver a world class customer experience that connects residents and visitors alike, linking seamlessly with the world's largest tram network, regional rail services, bus routes, and airport connections.
The successful MR5 bidder is scheduled to begin operations in late 2027.
This project is currently out to tender and the Department of Transport and Planning is collecting Expressions of Interest from local suppliers to provide to bidders to assist them in completing their Local Industry Development Plans and meet the project's Local Jobs First Policy obligations.
