MOORABOOL BATTERY

Overview

Moorabool Battery will be located outside Geelong, directly adjacent to the Victorian Big Battery and Moorabool Terminal Station. The project will involve the delivery of a 300 MW / 1200 MWh battery. The battery is ideally located to unlock additional renewable energy hosting capacity in the Victorian power system.

The construction of the Battery will include the following:

  • Installation of 300 MW of batteries stored in fully enclosed battery storage cabinets which are themselves housed within shipping or modular containers
  • Installation of medium voltage (MV) switchrooms and a small operations and maintenance facility within the project area
  • Onsite 220/33 kilovolt (kV) substation
  • Installation of ancillary equipment including electrical inverters, transformers, benching, earthing, and cabling within the project area
  • Installation of an underground transmission 220kV cable, traversing the electricity easement approximately 530 m to the Geelong-Ballan Road reserve. The cable will then run beneath Geelong-Ballan Road, connecting the Battery to the existing 220kV switchyard at the Moorabool Terminal Station (MTS).
  • Installation of security fencing and lighting
  • Creation of 8-meter-wide access (for construction and operation) adjacent to the existing access road, to the project area from Atkinsons Road in the north and internal access roads to the facility
  • Earthworks and drainage, including a retention pond; and
  • Temporary construction laydown area.
