Overview

Gippsland Skies Offshore Wind is a landmark renewable energy initiative, proposed to deliver 2.5 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind power from a site approximately 30 kilometres off the south coast of Gippsland, Victoria. This significant infrastructure project is being developed by a consortium of leading Australian and international companies-Mainstream Renewable Power, Reventus Power, AGL Energy, and Direct Infrastructure-uniting global offshore wind expertise with deep local market experience.

Once operational, Gippsland Skies is expected to generate enough clean electricity to power around 1.4 million Victorian homes-approximately 17% of the state's current energy demand. Over its 40-year projected lifespan, the project is forecast to contribute approximately AU$3.7 billion value-add to the Australian economy and create an estimated 4,700 direct jobs over the life of the project.

Project Proponent Introduction

Gippsland Skies will be delivered in stages, beginning with pre-construction activities such as environmental and engineering assessments and progressing through to construction, commissioning, and ongoing operations. The project is designed to strengthen the local renewable energy industry by encouraging deep collaboration with local suppliers, communities, and Traditional Owners.

Key components of the project include:

  • Offshore wind turbines with fixed-bottom foundations
  • Submarine array and export cables
  • Offshore and onshore substations
  • Onshore transmission infrastructure connecting to the existing grid

The project prioritises sustainability, community engagement, and First Nations partnerships and is committed to meaningful engagement, collaboration, and benefit-sharing with Traditional Owners and the surrounding community.

Project Timing

Gippsland Skies is currently in the feasibility and development phase, following the award of a Feasibility Licence in April 2024. The licence covers a 626 km2 area in the Gippsland offshore wind declared area.

Key milestones:

  • Feasibility studies: Underway, including environmental, geotechnical and marine surveys
  • Planning and approvals: Underway
  • Construction commencement: Targeted for early 2030s, subject to approvals and final investment decisions
  • First power generation: Approximately 3 years after construction commencement
  • Operational lifespan: Estimated 35 years
