Eni began its operations in Australia in 2000, as part of its strategy to expand in the region. In Australia, Eni owns and operates the Blacktip gas field, which supplies gas to the Northern Territory for power generation and industrial applications. Offshore gas production from Blacktip began in 2009, with the gas transported via a pipeline to the Yelcherr Gas Plant (YGP), located around 12km from Wadeye, where it is processed and then transported through the Bonaparte Gap Pipeline into the NT gas pipeline network.
Eni also holds two offshore retention leases in northern Australia containing the undeveloped gas discoveries of Verus and Blackwood located around 330 km north of Darwin.
In the first quarter of 2024, Eni acquired Neptune Energy, the previous operator of the Petrel field, and became a joint titleholder of the two adjoining retention leases NT/RL1 and WA-6-R containing the undeveloped Petrel gas field. The Petrel gas field is situated approximately 260km west-southwest of Darwin (NT) and about 170km offshore from the Western Australia coast
Additionally, in 2021, Eni established Eni New Energy Australia as a standalone company, under Plenitude, with a focus on investing in renewable energy production. Eni has three large scale solar plants in the Northern Territory with an installed capacity of about 59 MW.
In Timor-Leste, Eni holds a 40% interest in the Kitan Oil Project, and a non-operated interest in both the offshore Bayu-Undan Project in Timor-Leste waters and the Darwin LNG facility, which, up until late 2023, processed gas from the Bayu-Undan fields.
Since December 2023, Eni has operated the new exploration production sharing contract (PSC) TL-SO-22-23 offshore in Timor-Leste waters.
Currently, Eni employs over 100 people across offices in Perth, Darwin, YGP, and in Dili, Timor-Leste."
