Overview

The Mt Rawdon Pumped Hydro Project (the Project) is being developed by Mt Rawdon Pumped Hydro Pty Ltd, a joint venture comprising Mt Rawdon Operations Pty Ltd (a subsidiary of Evolution Mining), the owners and operators of the Mt Rawdon Gold Mine, and an investor group managed by ICA Partners Pty Ltd. The joint venture is currently undertaking a feasibility study into the potential for a pumped hydro facility at the site of the Mt Rawdon Gold Mine.

The Project's activities include a comprehensive geotechnical drilling campaign, further design development, and submission of the Project's Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).

The Project is located within, and adjacent to, the Mt Rawdon Gold Mine near Mt Perry, Queensland. Once constructed it will store energy for use during peak times, comprising the following components:

  • A purpose-built upper water reservoir created on land adjacent to the existing gold mine, capable of storing water required to generate 20,000 MWh of electricity;
  • A lower water reservoir created by repurposing the Mt Rawdon Gold Mine open-cut pit, once mining of the pit is complete;
  • Waterway tunnels connecting the upper and lower reservoirs in a closed-loop system; and
  • An underground powerhouse that contains the hydro generation units.

Queensland has outstanding renewable energy resources, with renewable generation having tripled from 2015 to 2022. The Queensland government is now aiming to have 70% of Queensland's energy needs met by renewable energy by 2032 and 80% by 2035.
Most renewable energy comes from wind farms and solar photovoltaic (PV), which are variable in that they generate electricity when conditions are right. Variable forms of renewable energy need to be complemented by energy storage, such as batteries and pumped hydro, which can store excess energy that is generated when the sun is shining and the wind is blowing and then release it back into the grid when it is needed (firming).

The Project will meet this need by providing low-cost, large-scale energy storage, which will be critical to meeting Queensland's renewable energy targets and its goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

The Project is likely to create 700+ jobs during peak construction and 25 to 30 jobs during operations.

Supplier Opportunities

Mt Rawdon Pumped Hydro Pty Ltd invites local industry to register their interest in supplying goods or services to the Project by submitting an Expression of Interest (EOI) through the ICN Gateway.

Suppliers should note that procurement activities for Project construction have not yet commenced. By registering an interest, suppliers will be notified of certain opportunities as they are presented to the market.

Information on the specific supply opportunities will be communicated on the ICN Gateway project page as it becomes available, with opportunities for local industry to register its interest against them. By submitting an EOI and ensuring your details are up to date, you will be informed of such opportunities as they are released.

Please ensure that:

  • Your company profile on the ICN Gateway is complete, up-to-date and accurate including electing to be notified via e-mail of supply opportunities;
  • You register your interest as a full or partial scope supplier (where applicable), and
  • You respond to all project and work package-specific questions.

It is important that suppliers submitting an EOI are aware that their submission does not guarantee that they will be invited to participate in procurement processes. All suppliers will be required to demonstrate capability and capacity in accordance with Mt Rawdon Pumped Hydro's standards to pre-qualify for specific opportunities.

Further Assistance

Mt Rawdon Pumped Hydro Pty Ltd encourages local industry to contact the ICN Queensland in the first instance to improve their understanding of the EOI process.
