Hitachi Energy has been selected by Marinus Link Pty Ltd (MLPL) to supply a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) project , which will augment the connection between mainland Australia and Tasmania's grid. The connection will enable the Tasmanian state to import excess supply of solar and wind produced in Victoria, while reserving its hydro and storing the extra energy. Clean hydropower can then feed the mainland grid when it is needed most, acting as a large battery for the nation. Moreover, it strengthens the security of supply in the Australian power grid in which electricity is increasingly generated from sustainable energy. The project will be executed in two stages and result in two 750MW HVDC links between Hazelwood in Victoria and Burnie in Tasmania.
As part of the first stage of the project, Hitachi Energy will supply its HVDC Light voltage source converter (VSC) stations, which will include the HVDC converter valves; the MACH digital control platform, converter power transformers and high-voltage switchgear; as well as system studies, design and engineering, supply, installation supervision and commissioning. Hitachi Energy intend to go to the Australian market for various scope packages which will include typical goods and services as listed below:
Converter Stations goods and Services required in Tasmania and Victoria:
- Transformer oil

- Service platform - EWP'S
- Safety Equipment suppliers
- General Equipment hire
- Installation services
- Transformer Noise enclosures
- Heavy Duty transport
