Overview

The Canberra Light Rail Stage 2A (LRS2A) Project is an extension of the existing light rail system (LRS1) between Gungahlin and the City.

The benefits of the project include:

  • Improved urban amenity and active travel with bike racks on board light rail vehicles and at stops
  • Improved access to workplaces, businesses, education centres and community events
  • Powered by 100% renewable energy - reducing emissions
  • Accessible for people of all abilities, wheelchairs and prams
  • Better connection between the city and the lake
  • Reliable and convenient with services every 5-15 minutes
  • Higher passenger capacity to buses - equivalent to three buses
  • Helping prevent future traffic congestion in the city.

The LRS2A Project comprises 1.7km of light rail from the existing terminus in Alinga Street through to a new terminus stop at Commonwealth Park and includes the construction of two intermediate stops at Edinburgh Avenue and City South.

LRS2A will be integrated seamlessly with LRS1 with the light rail vehicles travelling the full length of the combined LRS1-LRS2A line.

Key features of the light rail design include a wire-free track, green sections along Northbourne Avenue, London Circuit and Commonwealth Avenue, and a landscape that will strengthen the historic character of Commonwealth Avenue.

The LRS2A project also includes:

  • Changes to the road network (kerb widening and land adjustments) and traffic signalling
  • Relocation of utilities
  • New and altered drainage
  • Urban renewal works
  • Active travel improvements with the addition of the new cycling infrastructure
  • Integration of operations related systems (ticketing, information displays, wi-fi and CCTV)
  • A new bridge over Parkes Way, and
  • A new Traction Power Substation (TPS 6) adjacent to the Swinden Street Stop.

LRS2A Project timeline

  • Procurement from Aug 2024 through to mid 2025
  • Construction from early 2025 to 2027
  • Testing and commissioning from late 2026 to 2027
  • Operations commence early 2028
