Overview

Queensland Hydro designs, delivers, operates and maintains world-class, long duration pumped hydro energy storage assets to provide reliable, clean energy for Queensland.

The team draws on their extensive expertise in engineering, environmental and social impact to deliver certainty throughout the project life cycle, working with stakeholders to create lasting benefits for communities.

Our projects will play a critical role in helping meet the Queensland Government's renewable energy and net zero emissions targets, supporting the shift to a decarbonised energy system in Australia.

Queensland Hydro is currently working on two key projects:

  • The 2,000MW Borumba Pumped Hydro Project, located at Lake Borumba near Imbil, approximately 50km south-west of Gympie
  • The 5,000MW Pioneer-Burdekin Pumped Hydro Project, located in the Pioneer Valley approximately 75km west of Mackay.

Engaging local suppliers

Queensland Hydro is committed to providing opportunities for local suppliers and local employment. We encourage interested businesses to register interest via the ICN Gateway.

Delivery schedule

In March 2023, Queensland Hydro submitted the Borumba Pumped Hydro Project's Detailed Analytical Report (DAR) to the Queensland Government for its consideration and investment decision. In June 2023 the Queensland Government committed to $6 billion to fund the project. It will now formally move into the planning and approvals process, targeting first power in 2030.

For the proposed Pioneer-Burdekin project, Queensland Hydro is working on detailed design, cost analysis and key technical studies, with a detailed analytical report expected to be completed in mid-2024 to inform a final investment decision.

Stage 1 of the Pioneer-Burdekin pumped hydro project is planned for completion by 2032 to meet the 70% QRET and stage 2 by 2035 to meet the 80% QRET.
