About Bungama Solar
Bungama Solar is a 280MWac photovoltaic project to be developed on approximately 530 hectares of agricultural land in the suburbs of Bungama, Napperby and Warnertown, South Australia. The site is situated approximately 6 kilometers east of Port Pirie and 220 kilometers north of Adelaide. The Project is within the Local Government Area of Port Pirie Regional Council.
Bungama Solar is a large-scale utility power plant that creates energy from the sunlight via photovoltaic (PV) cells mounted on a single axis sun tracking system. Tracking solar panel systems follow the sun’s movement throughout the day for maximum energy production. The Direct Current (DC) electricity that is created by sun through the cells is fed through cables to a series of inverters where the Direct Current is converted to Alternating Current (AC) and increased in voltage. The inverters are connected through underground cables to a switching yard. In the switching yard the voltage of the electricity is again increased to reduce the electrical transmission losses. From the switching yard the electricity generated is then fed by underground cables to the Bungama Substation for connection to the South Australian electrical grid.
A 150MW Battery Energy Storage System (“BESS”) will be constructed as part of the Project to extend the hours during which the Solar Farm will supply electricity to the South Australian Grid. In addition, the BESS will contribute to power system security in the State.
Additional infrastructure which will be built as part of the Project includes internal access tracks, offices, workshop sheds, fences and drainage.
During the operational phase, regular inspections, panel cleaning, vegetation management, componentry servicing and infrastructure maintenance are required.
Solar farms typically have a minor physical disturbance footprint. As such, investigations into co-agriculture opportunities are underway to ascertain opportunities within Bungama Solar for other forms of traditional agriculture such as sheep grazing and apiculture to co-exist with the solar operations.
Bungama Solar is seeking local entrepreneurs and businesses who are eager to join the drive to grow the supply of renewable energy in South Australia. There are opportunities for small and large enterprises both during the construction of the Project and post commissioning.
