North-South Corridor: Torrens to Darlington section
Project at a glance
Supply Consultant, ICN SA
The 10.5 km Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Project is the final piece of one of Adelaide’s most important transport routes, the North-South Corridor (NSC). As the most significant road infrastructure project ever undertaken in South Australia, the T2D Project will unlock Adelaide’s traffic network, stimulate economic growth while sustaining liveability, and deliver long-term benefits for South Australians.
The T2D Project will realise these benefits by completing the vital missing link in the NSC, delivering a six-lane connection with a combination of in-tunnel, ground-level and elevated roads, to create 78 km of non-stop, traffic light-free motorway that spans Adelaide, from north to south.
The T2D Project solution, informed by extensive traffic analysis with advanced analytic modelling tools, provides three motorway lanes in each direction, connecting the Darlington Upgrade at Darlington in the south to the Torrens to Torrens Upgrade in the north.
Most of the motorway will be below surface, with tunnels located at each end. A combination of lowered and ground-level motorways, overpasses and underpasses at key intersections will connect the tunnels to the existing surface network as well as the rest of the NSC.
The solution consists of four key sections of motorway, configured to allow for a staged delivery:
- The Southern Tunnels will seamlessly integrate with the recently completed Darlington Upgrade, connecting Darlington to Anzac Highway. This section will deliver approximately 6 km of motorway, including more than 4.8 km of twin three-lane tunnels, and a new city-bound elevated ramp connecting the T2D with Anzac Highway (opening to traffic in 2029).
- The Southern and Northern Tunnels will be connected by an at-surface Tunnel Connector, which provides links to surrounding arterial roads, such as Anzac Highway and Richmond Road, to optimise use of surface network capacity and provide convenient connections to key destinations such as the CBD and Airport.
- The Northern Tunnels, between Sir Donald Bradman Drive and Torrensville, will join the Torrens to Torrens Upgrade to the Tunnel Connector, providing a further 2.2 km of twin three-lane tunnels (opening to traffic from 2030).
- The Northern Tunnels will be integrated with the Torrens to Torrens Upgrade through the Torrens Connector, crossing over the River Torrens.
