Sydney Metro West
Sydney Metro West is a new 24-kilometre metro line with stations confirmed at Westmead, Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park, North Strathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock, The Bays, Pyrmont and Hunter Street in the Sydney CBD.
Sydney Metro West will double rail capacity between Greater Parramatta and the Sydney CBD, transforming Sydney for generations to come.
The once in a century infrastructure investment will have a target travel time of about 20 minutes between Parramatta and the Sydney CBD, link new communities to rail services and support employment growth and housing supply.
The project is expected to create about 10,000 direct and 70,000 indirect jobs during construction.
Construction started on Sydney Metro West in 2020.
Sydney Metro West features:
- Faster, more frequent access to major employment and education centres like Parramatta and Sydney Olympic Park
- A new metro station in the heart of the Sydney CBD commercial centre, connecting directly to Sydney’s established and growing employment precincts.
- A new metro station at Westmead – one of Australia’s largest health and education precincts
- Delivering new rail services for the first time at Burwood North, Five Dock, The Bays and Pyrmont
- A new metro station at Sydney Olympic Park – Sydney’s sporting and entertainment super-precinct
- A new metro station at Pyrmont – delivering major benefits to the Pyrmont community and supporting plans to transform this harbourside suburb
- Integrated with the rest of Sydney’s public transport system
- Fully accessible with lifts and level access between trains and platforms
- Next generation fully air-conditioned metro trains
- All Sydney Metro infrastructure like the stations, trains and railway tracks are owned by the NSW Government
- Sydney Metro uses Opal ticketing and fares are set by the NSW Government.
The first major tunnelling contract valued at $1.96 billion was awarded in July 2021 to Acciona Construction Australia Pty Ltd and Ferrovial Construction (Australia) Pty Ltd Joint Venture to deliver 11 kilometres of twin metro rail tunnels between Sydney Olympic Park and The Bays.
The second major contract is expected to be awarded by the end of 2021 for the contract to build nine kilometres of twin tunnels between Westmead and Sydney Olympic Park.
Sydney Metro has also begun the process to appoint its third major tunnelling contractor for the Eastern Tunnelling. This contract for tunnelling between The Bays and Hunter Street in the Sydney CBD is expected to be awarded by late 2022.
Pending planning approval, Sydney Metro will also appoint contractors to deliver station and integrated station packages. Details of these packages will be released to the market at a later date.

Sydney Metro is a new stand alone railway network that will revolutionise the way Sydney travels.
Systems Connect is an unincorporated Joint Venture between CIMIC Group companies, CPB Contractors and UGL.
The Joint Venture has been contracted to design and construct the Line-wide works to convert the excavated tunnel into a working railway for Sydney Metro City & Southwest.
This will help deliver the new world-class Sydney Metro, expanding the city’s new metro railway into the CBD and beyond to Bankstown.
The Southwest Metro Station Upgrade Works Package 4 constitutes all the works required to repurpose Marrickville, Canterbury and Lakemba Trains Station to suit the new Metro Southwest services. This will include works such as the replacement of platform coping structure, resurfacing of station platforms, repurposing of station buildings, installation of throw screens on overbridges, construction of a new Metro services building at each station, installation of new lifts at Canterbury, installation of combined services routes, drainage works, fencing work and landscaping.
Crows Nest Station (SCN) is a new station being built under the Sydney Metro program of works, supporting the St Leonards specialised centre as a southern gateway to commercial and mixed-use activities. The station will also improve access to the restaurants and specialist shops in the Crows Nest village.
Sydney Metro is Australia’s biggest public transport project. The Sydney Metro City & Southwest project includes a new 30-kilometre metro line extending from the end of the Metro North West Line at Chatswood, under Sydney Harbour, through new CBD stations and southwest to Bankstown.
Construction of the new Barangaroo Station includes:
- one station entrance accessible from Hickson Road, with provision for a second station entrance to be delivered by Infrastructure NSW
- public domain works including footpaths, tree planting, lighting and street furniture
- associated roadworks
- new bike parking; and
- new kiss and ride and taxi activities
