Forest Wind (the Project) is a wind farm development in the Wide Bay Region of Queensland.
Forest Wind will be located within a large pine plantation on Queensland State Government owned land between Gympie and Maryborough. The Traditional Owners of the land on which the Project is located are the Butchulla First Nations People and the Kabi Kabi First Nations People.
The Project comprises up to 226 wind turbine generators and related infrastructure and has the capacity to generate up to 1200MW of electricity, enough to supply more than 550,000 homes, or 1 in 4 Queensland homes.
At 1200MW, the Project would contribute up to one quarter of Queensland’s Renewable Energy Target (RET) of 50% and offset up to 3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent each year.

The wind turbines and ancillary infrastructure will be located within an actively managed and operational pine plantation in Queensland State Government owned Toolara, Tuan and Neerdie State Forests situated between Gympie and Maryborough in the Wide Bay Region of Queensland.
Subject to final approvals the Project will comprise a wind farm with up to 226 wind turbine generators and related infrastructure. Forest Wind could be developed in multiple stages and on completion of construction, the Project will comprise of the following:
- up to 226 wind turbines with a power capacity of up to 1,200MW
- battery storage facilities (subject to feasibility)
- underground electrical distribution lines
- overhead high voltage transmission line
- vehicular access from main access points to the wind turbines using existing forestry tracks
- site entrances
- operations compounds, and
- weather monitoring equipment.

In February 2020, the Project received a conditional Development Permit from the State. Subject to receiving all remaining relevant approvals, construction of the wind farm might occur in multiple stages and is expected to take place from 2021, with the first stage operational by late 2023.
LOCAL BUSINESS AND TRADITIONAL OWNERS PARTICIPATION PROGRAMS
Siemens Gamesa is committed to facilitate the participation of Traditional Owners and Local Business in the Project where feasible. Local industry and Traditional Owners business (Butchulla and Kabi Kabi) can register their interest in specific work packages (listed below) on ICN Gateway.
Note: Potential suppliers should not approach the Traditional Owners’ representative bodies directly at this stage without prior approval from SGRE. For further details please refer to the “Traditional Owners Engagement Protocol” presented below in the Project Document section.
Forest Wind is likely to be built in stages, with the size of the first stage currently under development. The construction and operation of the project will be managed by Siemens Gamesa. Siemens Gamesa will supply the Wind Turbine Generators and will select and work with a core group of suppliers to deliver core work packages including:
1. Civil BoP
2. Electrical BoP
3. Logistics - Local and international
4. Crane and installation
In addition to the above 4 packages, further work packages will be available. Subject to suitable skills, labour availability and cost competitiveness, it is expected that multiple opportunities for local suppliers will be available. Active participation of Traditional Owners Butchulla and Kabi Kabi First Nations People will be encouraged and expected through project construction and operation.
WHAT TO DO NEXT?
1. Register in ICN:
Siemens Gamesa encourages businesses interested in supplying to the project to register an expression of interest (EOI) through the ICN Gateway webpage. Select the package that is relevant to your organisation.
2. Participate in project briefings
Parties that have registered their interest on ICN Gateway will be invited to project briefings by video conference and/or face to face (once the Covid-19 restrictions are lifted).
3. Be part of the project (if selected)
As the project transitions into construction and operation direct suppliers will be selected and major subcontractors will have access to the parties that have registered their interest in ICN.
Information on specific supply opportunities will be communicated on the ICN Gateway project page as it becomes available, with businesses able to register its interest against them.
Please ensure that:
- Your company profile on the ICN Gateway is complete, up-to-date and accurate including electing to be notified via e-mail of supply opportunities
- You register your interest for relevant scopes, and
- You respond to all project and work package-specific questions.
It is important that businesses submitting an EOI are aware that their submission does not guarantee that they will progress further in the procurement process. Only companies that can demonstrate capability and capacity in accordance with Siemens Gamesa’s standards will be invited to pre-qualify for specific opportunities.
