About the VicConnect Alliance

VicConnect Alliance is an alliance comprising UGL, Decmil and ARUP. VicConnect has been shortlisted for the opportunity to submit a Proposal for the Gippsland and Bendigo (G&B) Project.


About the Project

The Gippsland Line Project works comprise of:

  • upgrades to signalling, communications and Train Control Systems (TCS)
  • alterations to the existing interlocking, signalling, and communications systems to improve resilience and reliability on the rail corridor
  • upgrades to level crossings and pedestrian crossings along the Gippsland rail corridor
  • construction of new station platforms will be carried out at Bunyip, Longwarry and Morwell Stations with Traralgon Station’s platform reinstated and reactivated.


Track and civil works will include: 

  • duplication between Bunyip and Longwarry
  • extension of the Morwell Road 2 towards Traralgon, including turnout upgrades
  • modification to existing track within Traralgon Yard
  • rectification/replacement/upgrade of Armco pipe section at Morwell River
  • bridge and Culvert improvements required for track duplications including Wally Road Rail Bridge and Bunyip River, and improvements to drainage systems
  • staging works to facilitate the completion, treatment and disposal of the redundant infrastructure affected by the Works
  • driver training.


The Bendigo Line Project works comprise of:

  • upgrades to the existing Bendigo interlocking, signalling and communications to improve resilience and reliability on the corridor
  • the TCS will be altered and extended beyond the controlled boundary from North Bendigo Junction to Epsom/Eaglehawk by replacing the existing paper based manual train order system with an automatic & track control system.


Track and civil works will largely consist of:

  • modifying track changes to existing sidings, and will include: straight rail to replace turnouts removed at the redundant sidings, including Caltex Siding, California Gully Sidings (at the up and down end) and the down end of Workshop Siding ‘D’ and provision of rollout protection by installing a baulk
  • straight rail of the junction leading to Inglewood line which is currently booked out of service
  • providing rollout protection by installing a baulk on the Inglewood line
  • works associated with walkways, fencing and gates, and rail corridor track monuments and signage works
  • upgrades to level crossings between Bendigo and the North Bendigo Junction to changing existing train detection to axle counter train detection
  • staging works to facilitate the completion, treatment and disposal of the redundant infrastructure affected by the Works
  • driver training.


Meet VicConnect Alliance - Local Industry Engagement Forum 

During the proposal phase of the projects, VicConnect would like to engage with local suppliers and subcontractors who understand the local industry and can build on existing or develop local relationships with the intention of delivering the government's local industry objectives.


Construction is expected to commence in 2020, with expected completion for the Bendigo Line Upgrade in 2021 and the Gippsland Upgrade in 2022. VicConnect, together with ICN, are committed to providing full, fair and reasonable opportunity for capable local industry to participate across its supply chain opportunities and reflect the project teams’ commitment to both local and social industry participation.
