Sydney Metro City & Southwest
Sydney Metro has four core components:
- Sydney Metro Northwest - formerly the 36km North West Rail Link. This project is now open with a metro train every four minutes in the peak
- Sydney Metro City & Southwest - a new 30km metro line linking with Metro Northwest at Chatswood, and then under Sydney Harbour, through the CBD and south west to Bankstown. It is due to open in 2024 with the capacity to run a metro train every two minutes each way under the centre of Sydney.
- Sydney Metro West - new underground railway will connect Greater Parramatta and the Sydney CBD, doubling rail capacity between the two CBDs, linking new communities to rail services and supporting employment growth and housing supply. The locations of seven proposed metro stations have been confirmed at Westmead, Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park, North Strathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock and The Bays. Further planning is underway to determine the location of a new metro stations withing the Sydney CBD and at Pyrmont.
- Sydney Metro Western Sydney Airport - new metro rail will become the transport spine for Greater Western Sydney, connecting communities and travellers with the new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport and the growing region. The 23 kilometre new railway will have six new metro stations.
Sydney Metro is Australia's biggest public transport project.
From the north west, metro rail is being extended under Sydney Harbour, through new underground city stations and beyond to the south west.
In 2024, Sydney will have 31 metro railway stations and a 66lm standalone metro railway system, revolutionising the way Australia's biggest city travels.
New stations are being delivered at Crows Nest, Victoria Cross, Barangaroo, Martin Place, Pitt Street and Waterloo along with new underground platforms at Central Station.
Stations along the existing Bankstown Line will be upgraded. There will be safety screen doors on platforms and all stations will be fully accessible.
Together, Sydney Metro City & Southwest and the Western Sydney Rail Upgrade Program (a major program including new services and rail upgrades for the T1 Western Line) will deliver benefits for train customers across Sydney, especially the west, north west and south west, including:
- Cutting crowding on the T1 Western Line and on suburban trains from the south west
- Less platform crowding at Wynyard and at other key stations such as Town Hall and North Sydney
- Up to 10 minutes faster from Bankstown to the city
- Around 20 minutes faster trip, Martin Place to Macquarie Park
- Space for an extra 100,000 passengers in the busiest hour of the peak
The Western Sydney Rail Upgrade Program will deliver more trains and more capacity for people from Penrith, Blacktown, Westmead and Parramatta.
ICN is seeking registration of general interest from suppliers and contractors at all levels of project delivery. Companies that have registered will be notified of specific work packages as the project procurement proceeds, and invited to register specific interest.

Systems Connect is an unincorporated Joint Venture between CIMIC Group companies, CPB Contractors and UGL.
The Joint Venture has been contracted to design and construct the Line-wide works to convert the excavated tunnel into a working railway for Sydney Metro City & Southwest.
This will help deliver the new world-class Sydney Metro, expanding the city’s new metro railway into the CBD and beyond to Bankstown.
Pitt Street Station is an underground station, about 17 metres (north end) to 20 metres (south end) below ground level, located in the Sydney CBD.
The Southwest Metro Station Upgrade Works Package 4 constitutes all the works required to repurpose Marrickville, Canterbury and Lakemba Trains Station to suit the new Metro Southwest services. This will include works such as the replacement of platform coping structure, resurfacing of station platforms, repurposing of station buildings, installation of throw screens on overbridges, construction of a new Metro services building at each station, installation of new lifts at Canterbury, installation of combined services routes, drainage works, fencing work and landscaping.
Crows Nest Station (SCN) is a new station being built under the Sydney Metro program of works, supporting the St Leonards specialised centre as a southern gateway to commercial and mixed-use activities. The station will also improve access to the restaurants and specialist shops in the Crows Nest village.
Sydney Metro is Australia’s biggest public transport project. The Sydney Metro City & Southwest project includes a new 30-kilometre metro line extending from the end of the Metro North West Line at Chatswood, under Sydney Harbour, through new CBD stations and southwest to Bankstown.
Construction of the new Barangaroo Station includes:
- one station entrance accessible from Hickson Road, with provision for a second station entrance to be delivered by Infrastructure NSW
- public domain works including footpaths, tree planting, lighting and street furniture
- associated roadworks
- new bike parking; and
- new kiss and ride and taxi activities
Sydney Metro West will connect Greater Parramatta and the Sydney CBD with a new 24-kilometre metro line and nine stations.
The project is expected to create about 10,000 direct and 70,000 indirect jobs during construction. Construction on Sydney Metro West started in 2020.
