Overview of the Rum Jungle Rehabilitation Project
The Rum Jungle site is located 105 kilometres south of Darwin by road, near the town of Batchelor in the Northern Territory.

History:
The Rum Jungle Project area consists of three land parcels that were part of the former Rum Jungle Uranium Field. Uranium and copper exploration, mining and milling activities occurred in the area from 1953 to 1971 and the site underwent remediation works from 1982 to 1986. The 1980s rehabilitation effort, at the time, was considered to be at the forefront of mine rehabilitation and successfully reduced copper and AMD impacts to the Finniss River by approximately 70%. By modern standards, however, more can be done to improve environmental and cultural rehabilitation outcomes.
The Northern Territory Government has been working with the Commonwealth since 2009 to develop a design for rehabilitation in consultation with the Warai and Kungarakan traditional owners. The Main Project area contains Sacred Sites that are significant to Custodians and as such the restoration of cultural values onsite forms a part of the Projects high-level objectives alongside environmental remediation.
Project Objectives and Outcomes:
The rehabilitation work will be packaged to increase opportunities for Territory business involvement and to create participation opportunities for Aboriginal Territorians. This will ensure the rehabilitation of the Rum Jungle site maximises Value for the Territory and aligns with the cultural values of the Traditional Owners. The NT Government is committed to supporting businesses that provide opportunities to local contractors and suppliers who provide employment and training opportunities to Territorians.
The Project team seeks to maximise participation opportunities for local businesses in Batchelor, Coomalie shire and the Darwin area. We look forward to receiving registrations of interest from local industry and businesses including details of the services you can offer. All information will be collated and made available to prospective companies tendering for any of the work packages.
This Project is fully funded with a total projected timeframe for delivery of the key work packages over ten years, with some water treatment and monitoring activities ongoing beyond the ten years. The Stage 3 work program is intended to maximise the likelihood of NT businesses being able to bid competitively and participate in the delivery of works.

Expression of Interest will be sought from proponents with the suitable skills, experience and qualifications to provide civil works and site remediation services as part of the Rum Jungle rehabilitation project.
Works may include but are not limited to:
Site management including overarching health and safety management;
Provision of site facilities including compounds, maintenance workshops and communications;
Bulk earthworks to relocate and treat contaminated soil and rock to new storage facilities;
Develop and maintain access and haul roads, including culvert crossings;
Enabling works for Water Treatment Plant and Pit Backfill operations (these works under separate cover); and
Management, load and haul of borrow area materials.
All head contractors and relevant sub-contractors engaged to undertake the key works must have at the time of any formal tendering processes, and continue to maintain compliance with the following:
Accreditation under the Australian Government Building and Construction Industry Work Health and Safety Accreditation Scheme;
Must be accredited or recognised by Contractor Accreditation Limited (CAL) to a rating that is equal to or higher than its offer in the relevant CAL category and group; and
Subcontractors operating under the supervision of a head contractor will only need to attain CAL accreditation or recognition in an appropriate and pertinent category, group, and subgroup. Although subcontractors are not required to have individual CAL ratings, they must fall within the scope of the head contractor's CAL rating
