The Victorian Government has committed $675 million to build ten community hospitals close to major growth areas. The Community Hospitals Program will improve the way public healthcare is delivered in suburban and regional Victoria, providing more access to in-demand services, closer to home.
The location of these community hospitals are; Cranbourne, Craigieburn, Phillip Island, Sunbury, Eltham Area, Inner South Melbourne, Pakenham, Point Cook, Torquay, and Whittlesea Area.
Community hospitals are small public hospitals. This new type of facility is being developed to provide a broad range of walk-in hospital, community health and social care services in the one place, making it easier for families, patients, carers and clients to receive the services they need. A community hospital is a new kind of health facility that will enable better health, better access and better care in major population growth areas. The concept of a community hospital has been designed around an innovative model of care that targets health gaps by investing in evidence and needs-based care that will be collocated and integrated. By creating social and health care options that fit around patient needs and do this either at home or close to home, the health system can keep people healthy and connected to the support they need and build healthy and self-sufficient neighbourhoods. The proposed co-located delivery of hospital and community-based services represents the next stage of community-based care for the Victorian health system. Currently, there are no existing service delivery hubs that provide the necessary range of services by an integrated range of providers in a single location that can truly materialise opportunities for the Victorian community.
The first six sites - Cranbourne, Craigieburn, Whittlesea, Pakenham, Point Cook and Eltham - have been awarded to Lendlease as the Managing Contractor.
