Overview
The project will redevelop the Orbost Regional Hospital site to provide a new residential aged care complex that will replace the ageing and no longer fit-for-purpose Waratah Lodge and Lochiel House facilities. The new aged care complex will be located on the lower slope of the site, adjacent to the existing Lochiel House and south of the hospital building.
The new facility will connect back into the hospital via a linkway. A 'small household' model will be adopted for the new facility. Each house will have a resident kitchen, dining area and semi-private lounge area. There will also be a central hub with communal areas.
The $45.362 million investment will deliver a new aged care building collocated and connecting into the Orbost Regional Hospital:
- Demolition of Lochiel House.
- Construction of a new residential aged care facility including:
- Single bedrooms with private ensuites, promoting dignity, privacy and independence
- Support for a range of complex care needs and mobility, including those living with dementia
- Features to reduce the risk of infectious outbreaks
- Landscaped gardens and terraces to encourage residents to spend time outdoors
With a focus on mobility and dementia-friendly design, the facility will cater to the more complex needs of residents and better support independence and mental health. The design will also allow residents to enjoy open area views and natural light from their bedrooms, while terraces and gardens will be designed to blend in seamlessly to the surrounding natural environment.
The facility will also include a community room, reflection room and other common areas designed to encourage social interactions between residents, staff and families and allow for a wide range of day-to-day activities.
