Project Details

Project Overview:

FMG Solomon, a subsidiary of Fortescue Metals Group, will develop the Eliwana Project, following board approval in May 2018.

The Eliwana Project is for the development of a new mine and associated infrastructure at Fortescue’s Eliwana Site, which is approximately 90km west of the town of Tom Price in Western Australia’s Pilbara region.  The Eliwana Project will extend Fortescue’s existing iron ore mine sites of Cloudbreak, Christmas Creek and Solomon, and sustain production from existing deposits (particularly Kings and Firetail deposits).  Production is forecast to commence in December 2020.

Fortescue is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified contractors and suppliers for Project tendering opportunities on the Industry Capability Network of Western Australian (ICNWA) Gateway.

Scope Overview:

The Eliwana Project will require the establishment of:

  • a new ore processing facility with capacity up to 30 million tonnes per annum;
  • non-process infrastructure such as camps, telecommunications networks, electricity, water, sewage and wastewater facilities; and
  • 143 km of new rail infrastructure which will connect with Fortescue’s existing Hamersley line to Port Hedland.

Subject to further investigations, the Eliwana Project may also include an airstrip/airport at the Eliwana Site, a passing loop on Fortescue’s existing Solomon rail spur and/or additional rolling stock.

Indicative Timeline:

Preliminary enabling works commencing September 2018.

Earthworks scheduled for February 2019.

Main Mine and process facility construction works scheduled for December 2019.

Local and Indigenous participation:

In line with Fortescue’s commitment to supporting local Western Australian communities, requirements relating to the engagement of local and Indigenous vendors will be included in the selection criteria for Eliwana Project tendering opportunities.
