Albemarle Kemerton Plant
Project at a glance
Albemarle has established a Lithium Hydroxide manufacturing Plant and associated infrastructure within Lot 510 Wellesley Road, Wellesley, in the Kemerton Strategic Industrial Area.
The current manufacturing Plant and associated infrastructure has been constructed under a staged process. The initial Stages 1 & 2 construction have been completed. Commissioning of Stage 1 is complete and Stage 2 is currently in final commissioning.
Albemarle formally approved the expansion to build two additional processing trains 3 & 4 at the Plant on 3 May 2023.
The additional trains will be wholly owned and operated by Albemarle and would increase the facility's production by 50 kilo-tonnes per annum (50,000 metric tonnes per annum).
Operating at full capacity, the Kemerton plant would produce up to 100 ktpa (100,000 metric tonnes per annum) of lithium hydroxide.
Trains 3 & 4 will be a duplication of the existing Stage 1 & 2 Trains. Albemarle have engaged local consulting company Hatch Engineering as EPCM.
The construction workforce for the expansion project is predicted to be approximately 1,300 workers at peak, with Albemarle's preference being to recruit locally for construction and operations, where possible. Albemarle is already a significant employer in the region with more than 480 operational staff currently and approximately 370 more employees needed to operate the expanded project by 2026.
