Project Details


The Moorebank Logistics Park will transform the way containerised freight moves through Port Botany and deliver significant economic and environmental benefits.

 

It has been included on Infrastructure Australia's national priority project list and is a key component of Federal and State government transport policies to increase the percentage of freight moved by rail rather than road.

 

The project, located on a 243-hectare precinct at Moorebank in south-west Sydney near the junction of the M5 and M7 motorways, will include an import-export (IMEX) terminal, interstate terminal, up to 850,000sqm of warehousing and direct rail access to Port Botany via the Southern Sydney Freight Line.

 

On completion, the project will move more than one million freight containers in and out of Port Botany by rail instead of road, taking more than 3,000 heavy truck movements off Sydney's roads every day. That modal shift will deliver significant time and cost savings to importers, exporters, businesses and consumers.

 

The facility will also rail 500,000 containers annually through the interstate terminal located on the Moorebank site to regional areas as well as to Brisbane and Melbourne. This will remove thousands of additional long-distance trucks trips from NSW roads and provide a faster and more cost-effective export supply chain for farmers and regional businesses.

 

At full capacity, the shift from road to rail will reduce the distance travelled by trucks on NSW roads by an estimated 250,000km every day or more than 90 million kilometres a year.

 

The project will generate an estimated $11 billion in economic benefits and create an estimated 1,300 jobs through the construction stage and 6,800 ongoing jobs.

 

The Moorebank Logistics Park has also become the first transport infrastructure project to be backed by the Clean Energy Finance Corporation which describes it as a model for the future of sustainable low-emission freight infrastructure.

 

The facility has the potential to reduce carbon emissions by more than 110,000 tonnes of CO2e a year and will incorporate renewable energy sources on site capable of generating 65,000 MWh/year - enough to power 10,000 homes.

 

As well as the improvements it offers for freight handling in NSW, the facility will provide a significant ongoing local jobs boost for those living in the rapidly-growing south-west of Sydney.
