The aim of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games SAMP Program is to facilitate opportunities for Australian industry. The program will identify capable companies to supply goods and services for Rio 2016 Olympic Games and 2014 Brazil Football World Cup.

The combined budget for the two major events and supporting infrastructure is estimated at AUD$82 billion and will present a diverse range of opportunities for Australian industry. Brazil will face many challenges delivering these major events and the related supporting infrastructure.

Australia is well-placed to leverage off its world-class reputation in this sector gained from the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games. This reputation has been further enhanced with Australian industry delivering significant export outcomes from major events including the Beijing 2008 Olympics and the recent export successes to the upcoming Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games.

The Australia Brazil Sports and Events Alliance (the Alliance) comprising ICN Victoria, Austrade and AISES will identify and develop project opportunities with these major events and will provide support to Australian companies bidding for work in Brazil.

The BNDES has approved R$ 400 million in financing to remodel and refit the Governador Magalhães Pinto soccer stadium, known as Mineirão, which will be one of the venues of the 2014 World Soccer Cup in Brazil. The operation is within the scope of the BNDES ProCopa Arenas program and such funding will be earmarked for Minas Arena Gestão de Instalações Esportivas S.A., a Special Purpose Enterprise (SPE) comprising the engineering companies Construcap, Egesa and HAP. The consortium will be responsible for remodeling and operating the equipment for 27 years, in accordance with the Public and Private Partnership (PPP) framework established by the state government. Besides the arena, its surrounding esplanade, parking lot and footbridge connecting Mineirinho were also included in the request for bid, making up the “Minerão Complex”. The framework was prepared by Estruturadora Brasileira de Projetos (EBP), a company comprising several institutions, including the BNDES. Mineirão, the country’s second largest stadium in capacity and average audience, is located in Belo Horizonte and is the only arena in Brazil that hosts almost all the matches of two large soccer clubs, Atlético Mineiro and Cruzeiro, which do not have their own stadium. This prevents revenues from being deviated. The project also includes the multipurpose concept: commerce, culture and tourism, which contributes to increasing its ratio of usage. The stadium is in Pampulha, an affluent region in Belo Horizonte, with potential to develop tourism and leisure activities, according to a survey conducted by the state government.

International tender for the design of the second terminal at Belo Horizonte´s international airport, Confins. Interested groups and consortia will have until November 21 to lodge their bids, including their credentials, the technical proposal and price, with the selection to be made November 25. The winning bidder will be responsible for the engineering project, the basic and executive design projects and complementary services, with the work expected to be completed by the end of 2012. The plan is to begin construction in early 2013 with a timeframe of 18 months, finishing right before the 2014 Cup. The airport is expected to host around 20 million passengers per year by 2020. A smaller, ongoing refurbishment of terminal 1 is lifting capacity from the already overloaded 5 million to 8.5 million.
