Carrapateena boosts regional SA

OZ Minerals has engaged ICN SA to manage expressions of interest from suppliers and sub-contractors who want to provide goods and services to the Carrapateena copper-gold project.

Located 160 km north of Port Augusta, Carrapateena is one of the country's largest undeveloped copper deposits. The project will be an underground operation, with an estimated mine life of 20 years.

Construction of Carrapateena is underway with commissioning scheduled for Q4 2019 after which the project will ramp up to steady state production. Around 1,000 jobs are expected to be created from construction through to production, with OZ Minerals prioritising sustainable local procurement and local employment. According to the Carrapateena project website, ‘OZ Minerals is focused on opportunities for South Australians with particular attention on the Upper Spencer Gulf and Outback Communities.’

‘The OZ Minerals’ Carrapateena project is using ICN SA as its key platform to connect lead contractors with local suppliers,’ Project Director Geoff Cowie said.

‘With its clear interface, the project has already received numerous expressions of interest through the portal, giving the team an understanding of the local skills and capability. The system’s reporting functionality makes it easy to track against internal targets and the team at ICN SA has been very responsive and knowledgeable.’

ICN has created separate portals for businesses to:

  • register to receive updates on the Carrapateena project
  • register interest in working on the project and relevant contract packages
  • access the standard Carrapateena pre-qualification form.

ICN SA Consultant Gavin Asikas said the project had the potential to inject investment into the region, and would provide exciting opportunities for local companies.

‘At this stage, OZ Minerals and its lead contractors are seeking expressions of interest in a number of engineering, procurement and construction work packages to gauge local capacity and capability. This is a great opportunity for small regional businesses to be noticed by a large, international mining company.

‘It is also a great example of how your Gateway profile can open up new business prospects.’
