Major road upgrade for regional South Australia

Local suppliers are encouraged to submit expressions of interest in an almost $40 million road upgrade for South Australia’s Upper Yorke Peninsula.

Downer won the major tender earlier this year and is working with ICN SA to source local content.

The project is expected to improve safety and efficiency for heavy vehicles, motorists and agricultural vehicles driving on roads in the region.

Downer is currently seeking expressions of interest through ICN Gateway for a major component of the program to improve freight access between Ardrossan and Port Wakefield for road train access.

‘The road between these towns is a “missing link” in the Restricted Access Vehicle network, and this upgrade will open up the Yorke Highway between Ardrossan and Port Wakefield to road trains, easing freight productivity constraints for the Yorke Peninsula,’ ICN SA Manager Bettina Venner said.

In a statement announcing the project, Regional Development Minister Geoff Brock said the upgrade would help local primary producers and industry to become more competitive, while improving the safety of locals and holiday makers.

The program of works includes:

  • A new roundabout at the junction of the Yorke and Copper Coast Highways.
  • New overtaking lanes on the Yorke Highway.
  • Bridge widening at Port Clinton.
  • Safety improvements on Yorke Highway, north of Ardrossan.
  • Upgrade of the intersection of the Curramulka to Port Vincent Road and Minlaton to Port Vincent Road.
  • Pavement rehabilitation on the Bute to Kulpara Road.
  • Upgrades on the Copper Coast Highway between Paskeville and Kadina.
  • Intersection upgrade Minlaton-Yorketown Road and Minlaton-Warooka Road.
  • Shoulder sealing.
  • Other intersection and junction upgrades.

The project has been primarily funded from the South Australian Government’s Last Mile Freight Access Program, as well as the Federal Government’s Black Spot Programme and Minor Works Programme.

‘The upgrade is expected to employ about 75 people a year during the construction phase, and we urge interested local suppliers to ensure their Gateway profile is up to date,’ Bettina said.
